What to Wear to a Massage: A First-Timer's Guide

What to Wear to a Massage

Sixty minutes is the sweet spot for a first massage, and you should wear loose, comfortable clothes you can take off easily. In most spas you undress only as far as you're comfortable with, and you stay covered with a sheet or towel the whole time.

Here is everything you need to know before you walk in. Once you know the steps, the nerves usually fade.

What should I wear to a massage?

Most people come in their own clothes and change into a robe or sheet at the spa. You don't need to be fully undressed. Take off what you'd feel comfortable without, and keep on underwear if that helps you relax.

Pick simple clothes for the trip over. Think of a soft top, loose pants or shorts, and flat shoes. Skip anything tight or hard to pull off, like skinny jeans or a belt with a big buckle.

  • Wear something loose that's easy to get in and out of.
  • Leave jewelry at home, or take off rings and necklaces before you arrive.
  • Skip heavy perfume or scented lotion. Your therapist may use oil, and strong smells can be distracting.
  • Bring a hair tie if you have long hair.

What happens during my first massage?

Your therapist will meet you at the front desk or in the waiting room. They'll walk you to a treatment room and ask a few short questions. Expect questions about any sore spots, injuries, medical conditions, or medication. Answer honestly, because this helps them choose the right pressure and technique.

Then they'll step out so you can undress and get onto the table. You'll lie under a sheet, and only the part being worked on will be uncovered. When they return, they'll knock first and then start.

Tell them right away if anything feels wrong. You can ask for less pressure at any time. Your therapist wants to know, and a good one will adjust without fuss.

What should I say to my therapist?

You don't need special words. Just say what you want. "Firm pressure, please," or "A little lighter on my lower back," is plenty. If you're not sure what you need, say that too.

Speak up if the room is too warm or cold, or if the music or lights bother you. These are small things, and it's easy to fix them.

What should I do after my massage?

Take a minute to get up slowly before you move around. Drink some water afterwards and take it easy for the evening. Some people feel a bit sore for a day, especially after deeper work, and that's normal.

If you're going to Tulsa for the afternoon, plan something calm. Walk through Gathering Place or get a cold drink on Cherry Street. Oklahoma summers are hot and long, so keep an eye on the heat once you step outside.
